The Book of Mormon...

I'm a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, but most people know us as Mormons because of our belief in the Book of Mormon. I have read the Book of Mormon many times and have received powerful witnesses that it is the word of God. Every time I read it I feel God's spirit and am drawn closer to Him. The Book of Mormon teaches me of Christ and confirms my faith in Him. I love this book with all my heart and esteem it as I do the Holy Bible, as scripture and as the word of God. It is a second witness, along with the Bible, that Jesus is the Christ, the son of the living God. Everything that brings me closer to God through His spirit I hold dear. The Bible and the Book of Mormon are two of those things.

Briefly, the Book of Mormon chronicles the history and prophetic writings of a group of people who were led out of the land of Jerusalem in the year 600 BC during the reign of King Zedekiah, just prior to the time of its fall to Babylon. Jeremiah, of the Old Testament, is prophet at the time, but has been imprisoned because of the wickedness of the people of Jerusalem.

The Lord ultimately led this group of people to the land now known as America. The American Indians are descendents of the people of the Book of Mormon. The Lord Jesus Christ visited these people after His resurrection and an account of this visit and ministry is found in the Book of Mormon (3 Nephi6 11-26).

During His ministry among the people of the Book of Mormon He delivered the same sermon we know from the Bible as the Sermon On the Mount (3Nephi 12-15). The fact that this same sermon was taught among both people reveals its spirtual significance. These things taught by our Lord can not be ignored by any who seek to be the Lord's disciples...who desire to follow Him. Doing the things  the Lord has asked us to do is how we reveal our hearts to the Lord and show our love for Him (John 14:15).

Jesus mentioned the people of theBook of Mormon when He said that He had other sheep and that they also would hear His voice (John 10:163Nephi 15:13-24).

The people of the Book of Mormon split into two nations called the Nephites after a man named Nephi, and the Lamanites after Nephi's brother, Laman. This division resulted in many wars and contentions.

Throughout the history of these two peoples, prophets called of God maintained records both historical and spiritual. These records were abridged into a single account by a prophet named Mormon just prior to the destruction of the Nephites by the Lamanites. The Book of Mormon takes it's name from this man.
